Salve!
Explore the Ancient World—Shape Your Future
At Washington University in St. Louis, Classics is more than the study of ancient Greece and Rome—it's a gateway to big questions, powerful stories, and enduring ideas. Our department invites you to investigate the ancient Mediterranean through language, literature, history, archaeology, and philosophy—while developing skills that matter in any field.
Two Paths to the Past
The Classics Major or Minor offers a deep dive into the ancient world through the study of Ancient Greek and/or Latin. You'll explore texts in the original languages and gain a strong foundation in classical literature, culture, and thought.
The Ancient Studies Major or Minor provides a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to the ancient world—with no language requirement. Choose from courses in art and archaeology, ancient history, mythology, and more.
Both tracks foster critical thinking, clear communication, and a broad cultural perspective—skills valued in careers from law and medicine to education, tech, and public service.

"By learning about Ancient Greek and Roman history and culture, I was able to appreciate not only the key differences between the ancient and modern world--but also the similarities. I love Classics because it allows me to vividly engage with history and recognize the way ancient civilizations shape the world we live in today. I know that the writing, research, critical thinking, and analytical skills I gained from my classics degree will serve me well in law school and beyond."
